I’m the guy getting the random 171KB usage issue that Wingjames mentioned. I’m using a Rogers 3g 8gb iPhone w/ 500MB data plan and for the last two months have hit me 500MB max at about the 25th of the month. Interestingly enough, on both occasions I receive the “You’ve reached 80% of your limit” about 24 hours before I receive the “You’ve reached 100% of your limit”. Although I’m not a brain scientist of rocket surgeon that would mean that I’m using 20% (100MB) of my quota in 24 hours. When I call Rogers they always acknowledge how it’s “funny” or “strange” that I’m using exactly 171KB’s of data at random occurrences every day, I’ve yet to get a solution.
So far this has been a two week battle with Rogers and I’ve yet to get satisfactory results. I’ve spend a cumulative 3 hours on the phone and have been transferred to Customer Service, Tech, Data, etc.. and back. I’ve been given lots of “solutions” by the Rogers CSR’s but they aren’t realistic, some of these include;
Visual Voicemail – Nope, I use my phone as a business phone and rarely miss a call
Apps – Nope, I deleted all my non OEM apps ~7 days ago and still have this 171KB usage charge, additionally my girlfriend and I share a computer (iTunes) and have the same apps, and she does not have this problem.
Weather Updates – I believe that the OEM weather application only updates once open..? Could somebody confirm? Regardless I could count on my hands the amount of time I’ve used this.
Accessing my Camera Roll – According to one CSR this uses data? This is something I access rarely so it couldn’t be that.
Sending/Receiving Emails – This is the logical answer, but if I’m uploading a sent message to the server, or downloading a received why is the file size always identical? Furthermore the times of these occurrences do not correspond with the times I send/receive mail. One CSR mentioned that’s it’s because the data log doesn’t show each message individually and shows them in “blocks” which all happen to be 171KB’s… Sounds fishy.
I am far from a power user, and if this is being caused by something I’m doing I’d be happy to stop, I’ve mentioned this to every Rogers CSR (and there have been many…) I’ve spoken to. My phone log is reset at billing cycle and shows me around 200MB when I receive my quota exceeded message, why is this mysterious usage not being recorded? What is causing it? Billing? Usage? Hardware problem? I’m not passing the buck as Rogers problem, it could be me. As the service provider it’s Roger’s responsibility to help me solve this, so far they’ve provided uneducated responses and have been of little assistance, all the while my bill is going through the roof. I was with Bell Mobility for 7 years before I recently switch to Rogers, I made a terrible mistake.
I had a similar problem with my Bell Blackberry Pearl. The battery would barely last a whole day.
After the tech rep told me this would never stop happening until I purchase a data plan (it’s along story why I have a blackberry with no data plan, which I plan to post one day when the story stops getting loner) I realized it was because I had turned data services off, and it was trying like mad to ping the data network, draining its batteries in the process. (I’m still getting a warranty replacement for the futzy trackball, though)
You might have a similar problem, where it tries to ping the data network for some strange reason, though really I think the best bet is just to take it in to the store you bought it from and demand a warranty replacement. You may also want to wipe the device and reinstall the firmware, in case some non-OEM software left some junk on it.
Alternately, I’m sure you can get Steve Jobs voodoo dolls around somewhere…
