So a bit of information for the union doo-gooders:
The reason the city wants to change the current scheduling arrangement is because of an Auditor General’s reports stating abuse of the current system. With a more efficient scheduling process there could be up to 100 less drivers on payroll, saving muchos deneros. Some of this stems from abuse, and apparently, according to the Auditor General, instances of using a “buddy system”; Joe schedules a Friday morning shift, Bill schedules him self as a replacement. Joe calls in sick right before his shift and get a full paid sick day, Bill works in lieu and gets double pay. The city suggested they work together with the union to develop a new scheduling system, they even suggested hiring a union staffer to be in house to ensure that all seniority rules were followed, etc…
Despite this, the city’s final offer (which had been modified from their previous offer) was not presented to union members, but resulted in OC union reps to walk away from negotiations, without consulting the people they’re supposedly “protecting”.
What about Andre Cornellier (local union rep)? He was quote early this AM when OC members arrived on the picket lines as saying “It’s all about inconvenience” (regarding the placement of picketers).
RESPECT AND DIGNITY, NUTTIN’ BUT IT.
