Q&A: Do you wear glasses to the gym?

I know that this may seem silly, but I have been wondering what to do about this for a while now.

Over the past couple of months, I have realized that I must wear prescription eye wear (all the time). Contacts or glasses. Recently, I took the plunge and bought two new pairs of glasses, hopping to stop wearing contacts.

When I go to the gym, I normally don’t wear my glasses, but I’ve come to realize that this is now becoming a problem. There are people that I  know who go to the same gym that I do, and I’m always worried that they will nod and say ‘hi’ and I won’t even know that they are doing it and that I’ll seem like a sob.

I’ve never noticed, but was wondering, do people wear glasses to the gym?

I don’t want to go out and buy disposable contacts, because that seems like alot of extra cash to put in, just to go to the gym. If I have to though, I will.

So what do you do?

-J.

  1. I wear my glasses to the gym because contacts make me want to scratch my eyes out so I don’t really have much of a choice. Even so, my glasses don’t get in the way or create any problems when I’m working out. And I see plenty of people wearing glasses at my gym…

  2. I don’t go to the gym but I found wearing glasses to work out didn’t work for me. Not to be gross but when my face sweats they were sliding down my nose and while lifting my arms to push them back up did count as extra exercise it really got annoying. I stick to contacts. I get the kind that you can wear for two weeks, if I only wear them for exercise, they last about 6 to 8 weeks. A box of 6 is under $20, its a justifiable expense in eyes.

  3. What’s your prescription?
I’m -3.25 and I don’t wear glasses to the gym. They get in the way and slide down my nose. My friend is -2.50 and she always wears hers.

Sounds like it’s a personal thing!

  4. I am faced with the same problem as J. I’ve always worn my contact to the gym, heck I’ve always worn my contacts everywhere. Looks like this has caught up with me and I was recently told that need a long break from contacts.
Kerryn: I’m -3.25 aswell. You don;t have a problem not wearing your eyewear?

  5. I’ve started to go back to Goodlife. When I got my glasses I was smart and got two pairs. Now I save the more durable ones of the gym and wear the other ones daily. So far this is working for me.

I took a Spin class the other day and sweated my heart out. Yes my glasses where sliding down my nose, but it was nothing that a little towel dry couldn’t fix.

The amount of money that I am saving by wearing my glasses is amazing. :)

  6. Not to mention the fact that you are saving your eyes from damage…. Good stuff! I’m like a contact lense junkie, it’s really hard for me to let go. Thanks for the encouragement!

  7. i did it! for a while now, it’s tottally do-able

  8. You could just explain to your friends at the gym that you have bad sight and sometimes you can’t see their faces, even just across the room, without glasses. So don’t feel snubbed if you miss a hello nod or whatever. Also go to “TRI optical” in chinatown they are without a doubt the best optical specialist in the city. They will find you a great fitting pair and could also provide advise for this situation.
