After reading a very interesting debate on How About Orange’s blog today, I thought that I would pose the same question to you out there.
Craft vs. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) – What do you think about the two way to describe handmade goods? Does crafting to you sound like cheesy Popsicle stick crafts? Does DIY make you think of that bird house project you never finished?
What’s your view on the two?
- J.
p.s. I thought that I would add a poll question to the side of this post. I am curious to see if people would consider Apple Banana Cantaloupe to be a craft or DIY?
I tend to think of D.I.Y as a more political term… it implies that you’re doing something yourself rather than buying it, for whatever reason: maybe because it’s too expensive to buy, or because you want to personalize it, or because you just plain enjoy it!
I think of DIY as a nice “f#*% you!” to Americana consumerism trends as well. ie- “I could buy this hat at Old Navy, but I’m going to knit it myself rather than support a corporation that gets Korean children to do it”. Dig?
(of course, I do just like saying “f#*% you” for the hell of it, as well)
“Crafting” on the other hand kinda implies something you’ve made that you don’t necessarily need… Decoration- ie. macrame whatnot, handpainted vases, a rediculous collection of friendship bracelets.
Gizmos- ie. paper clip caddies? I dunno. Junk.
Apple banana Canteloupe is DIY in my books!

I have actually been thinking about this a lot and I always figured that crafts were what people did at home. DIY makes me think of home renovations and I refer to people like you as artisans.
